In a major move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract for the power-hitting player.

Contract Details and Incentives

The agreement grants a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with compensation of sixteen million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the final year.

Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for earning the MVP award.
• Half a million dollars for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
• $250,000 for ranking between fourth and tenth.
• Another $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.

The agreement provides that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his permission and makes him a unrestricted player at the end of the contract. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Franchise History

As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club get a 15% cut of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to represent the White Sox, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.

Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a walk-off two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling one-run win. The following day in the championship game against the USA, he hit a tying shot in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.
