Gavin Newsom States He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has revealed that he will decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.
"Absolutely, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom stated when pressed about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
The governor's time in office as governor concludes in early 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he noted that any choice is not imminent.
"It's up to destiny," he added.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
He has come to the forefront as a high-profile adversary of the current federal leadership, using his social media accounts and advocating for a proposition that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in following GOP gerrymandering. This move has drawn criticism from critics.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a weekend interview on a major news network. The secretary disclosed a strategy to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested suspending the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," Duffy declared, after a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that led to loss of life and four injuries.
The governor's team highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the individual's authorization repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a CDL under federal law.
The transportation secretary had before announced he was withholding additional funds from the state for ignoring English language requirements for commercial drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," his administration responded in a last month's comment responding to Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."
Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects
A recent poll revealed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has grown to an mean of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to under 40%.
Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his future for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.
"The thought that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he stated. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
