The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
