The Red Devils Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
