Extreme heat and raging wildfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major alert for extreme heat has been declared across a large portion of the southwestern region.

This situation come after recent bushfires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for later this week in areas within SA and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, delivering intense heat to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of tinder-dry land and relentless high temperatures creates a dangerous scenario for emergency crews.
